About me

My name is Julio Taquechel

I was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1955. My background in graphic design and typography profoundly shaped the way I understand composition, balance, and color. After leaving Cuba in 1985 and beginning a new chapter in New York, I discovered painting as a language through which I could express what words could not. Since 1992, I have lived and worked in Miami, where I have developed a body of work centered on fluid abstraction. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, I create one-of-a-kind compositions inspired by nature and landscapes, often imagined from an aerial perspective, allowing color, movement, depth, and light to become the true protagonists of each painting.

Artist statement

Painting is my way of exploring the relationship between color, movement, and nature. Rather than depicting specific places, I create imagined landscapes that emerge through layers of flowing acrylic, allowing each composition to evolve organically.

My process embraces unpredictability. By combining acrylic, water, silicone, and a variety of tools, I encourage the paint to move freely across the canvas, revealing textures, depth, and forms that cannot be precisely repeated. Each painting is a dialogue between intention and chance.

I am drawn to the expressive power of color. From an aerial perspective, natural forms dissolve into abstract fields that invite contemplation rather than description. My work is not about representing the landscape as it exists, but about capturing its energy, rhythm, and emotional resonance.

Creative process

Every painting begins without a predetermined image. I work primarily with acrylic on canvas, combining paint, water, and silicone to create fluid interactions that develop naturally. Through successive layers and careful intervention, I seek compositions that balance spontaneity with intention, resulting in unique works defined by movement, luminosity, and depth.
